Abstract

326,205. Carborundum Co., Ltd., (Carborundum Co.). Dec. 3, 1928. Tunnnel furnaces; drying-ovens.-In a furnace installation, adapted particularly for porcelain enamelling and comprising a tunnel furnace, with preheating, firing, and cooling zone 12, 13 14, and a preliminary drying-chamber 11, the latter is heated by the waste gases from the furnace which pass through the duct 15 into a lower compartment 16, Fig. 3, of the drier and from thence through dampercontrolled openings 4 into an intermediate chamber 17 separated from the ware-containing compartment 20 by an iron partition 22. The wastegas duct 15 is formed with a branch 1 through which a proportion, controlled by dampers 3, 8, of the gases passes to an air-heater 2 which supplies combustion air to the firing zone 13 of the furnace through a conduit 21. A portion of the hot air from the heater 2 may be used for warming the building or for heating a separate drier. An outlet, connected to a fan or the stack, is provided in the roof of the drying chamber 20 for the escape of moisture and volatile products from the ware together with any air entering at the ends of the drier. The ware is carried successively through the drier and the furnace by wheeled trucks or by an overhead conveyer as described in Specification 308,613.
