Open fireplaces; grates; fenders ; hearths. - A complete set of parts for a fireplace, comprising a surround, a fire-grate with or grate back, and a without a fret or trivet, a grate back, and a hearth and curb, with or without a mantel, is made of sheet-metal units formed with inturned edges for securing them to one another or to a cement backing, the whole being vitreously enamelled. Fig. 3 shows a fireplace comprising a. back a, hearth c, dog grate d, fret c, jambs g<1>, breast g, and mantelshelf h, all formed of sheetmetal in this way. Fig. 10 shows a recess lined with plates a, a' connected by grooved strips a<3>, or shaped to form a concave or other shaped recess as indicated in dotted lines. The hearth, if flush with the floor, is formed with inclined downturned flanges on the edges for securing it to the cement bed: when the hearth is raised, it is formed with downturned sides of the required height, the bottom edges of which are inturned to retain a cement filling. Dwarf pillars f may be formed at the corners. The curb is formed of a single pressed metal unit, or of a member connected by welding, and is filled in with cement. The mantel shown in Fig. 12 comprises jambs g<1> with separately-formed caps g<2> and bases g<3>. a breast g extending behind the jambs and secured to their back edges, shelves h, h<1>, and frieze i. A simpler surround or mantel is formed by pressing a single sheet of metal to form the jambs and breast, a separate sheet being riveted or welded to the rear edges of the inner sides of the jambs to form the back of the firespace.
