Abstract
373,455. Plate heat exchangers. McKEAN, J. G., Westerhill, Mount Vernon, Lanarkshire, and JONES, R. F., 239, Auldhouse Road, Newlands, Glasgow. June 23, 1931, No. 18128. [Class 64 (iii).] A heat,exchanger for fluids comprises a metal plate having straight grooves in its opposite sides through which the fluid flows, the grooves in one side alternating with those in the opposite side. In a steam-heated oil heater comprising a plate 3 having grooves 1, 2 and disposed between heat-insulated plates 5, 6, the steam enters the port 8 at one end of the plate 6 and flows through the grooves in one side of the plate 3 to an outlet 9, while the oil flows in countercurrent to the steam through the grooves on the opposite side from an inlet at one end to an outlet 11 at the other. In a modification, the grooves are closed by strips 12, Figs. 6, 7, and 8, and the steam enters the port 19 at one end of a centrally partitioned block 13 and flows through one half of the grooves in one side of the plate 3 to a chamber 18 in another block 17 from which it returns through the other half of the grooves to the block 13 and is discharged through the port 20. In another arrangement, particularly for cooling oil, two plates through the grooves in which the oil flows in series are disposed on opposite sides of a cooling liquid distribution plate and between interconnected plates for the supply and discharge of the oil.
