[Class 64 (iii)] In plate apparatus intended particularly for heating raw and cooling pasteurised milk, the raw milk enters the regenerative set 1 at the left, Fig. 3, and flows through spaces 9, 10, 11 to the outlet 12 in the terminal plate 4a. The pasteurised milk flows from the right through passages 18, 19, 20. From set 1, the raw milk passes through set 2 in countercurrent with hot water to the pasteuriser, while the pasteurised milk passes through 21 to set 3, where it is cooled by ammonia &c. The plates 29, Fig. 4, of set 1, are corrugated and provided with removable gaskets 37. The embossed portions 30, 31 may be punched out to provide ports, and each may have a port gasket groove to prevent fluid passing through the port escaping into the interplate space. Alternate plates are reversed end to end. The corrugations of adjacent plates are at a small angle to each other, causing turbulent fluid flow. In Fig. 5, the porting arrangement provides for fluid entering ports 30 at the right-hand end of the left-hand plate 29, and leaving through ports 31 at the right-hand end of the right-hand plate 29. The parallel flow arrangement of Fig. 3 may be changed to a series one by altering the porting arrangement. The terminal plates 4, 4a of set 1 each consist of four castings, Fig. 19, connected by pipes 88, and members 89. An alternative construction for set 1 comprises a set of plates having gaskets on both sides, and a set of plain plates alternating with them. The plates for system 3 are arranged in closed pairs. The corrugations in any pair may be parallel, and welded, the ammonia passing along the pipes thus formed perpendicularly to the milk flow between pairs. Of the clamping heads 5, 6, 5 is fixed to the stand 8, while 6 moves on rollers; rollers may also be mounted at the side of 6.
