Abstract
618,606. Plate heat-exchangers. WATSON, F. (Aktiebolaget Ljungstroms Angturbin). May 22, 1946. No. 15540. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 29, 1946.] [Classes 64(i) and 64(iii)] In a plate heat exchanger in which the plates either are alternately heated and cooled by gases flowing alternately through the same channels, or conduct heat between two media flowing through adjacent channels, superimposed plates are spaced by ribs 12, 14, bars, or the like to form open channels, and have between the ribs, etc., furrows 16 which are narrow and shallow compared with the width and depth of the channels and are oblique to the general direction of fluid flow. The furrows produce in each channel upon different portions of the boundary layer, in different places on the same cross-section, lateral flow in opposite rotative senses. The furrows may be all parallel, as shown in Fig. 3, or be arranged chevronfashion in each channel, as shown in Fig. 8. All the plates may be furrowed, or alternate plates 36 may be substantially flat, as shown in Fig. 8. The ribs may be unequal distances apart, or extend to different distances from the edges of the plates, so that by reversing successive plates during assembly nesting can be avoided.
