Abstract
397,024. Heating by circulation of fluids. BARON, H., 231, Strand, London. -(Neufeldt & Kuhnke Ges. ; Werk Ravensberg, Habsburgerring, Kiel, Germany.) Feb. 7, 1933, No. 3774. [Class 64 (ii).] The flow of heating fluid in the radiators 5 of a partitioned enclosure such as a railway carriage is controlled by a valve 2, Fig. 1, in accordance with the maximum instantaneous temperature in the enclosures. This may be effected by each compartment containing the heat sensitive element 7 of a thermostat with an expanding bellows 9. A plate 12 is moved to operate the valve 2 whenever any one of the bellows 9 moves beyond a certain distance under the influence of rising temperature in its particular enclosure. In a modification a vapour pressure thermostat is used, the heat sensitive portion, containing liquid 24, Fig. 3, and vapour 25, extending through all the compartments and thus producing the desired effect as the vapour pressure will always be that corresponding to the temperature of the hottest portion of the heat sensitive element. The thermostat acts indirectly on the valve 32 through bellows 26, 29 and connection 28, which are filled with heat expansible fluid, a branch 33 being provided extending to a chamber 34 outside the enclosures to furnish a superimposed control according to outside temperatures. The heat sensitive element may be composed of separate sections of piping for each chamber jointed as shown in Fig. 5, with a washer of heat insulating material 42 between, or a number of tubes arranged in parallel, or two tubes forming an annular channel for the liquid and vapour. The element may also be constructed to slope upwards or downwards to the centre of each compartment.
