Convention dates, Nov. 17, 1933, Dec. 29, 1933, and Jan. 24, 1934. [Class 135] [See also Group XXXVII] A thermal relay for operating valves, damper; and the like in response to changes in tempera ture, comprises a chamber 4 closed at its lower enc by a corrugated capsule 3 and connected by a pipe 5 to a chamber 6 thus forming a closec system which contains a liquid with which is mixec a quantity of a light volatile liquid which main ly lies in the chamber 6. A thermally sensitive device 8 such as a contact thermometer is adapted, on a rise in temperature, to connect to a source of supply an electric heater 9 in the chamber 6. This volatilizes the liquid in the chamber 6 forcing liquid down the pipe 5 to move the capsule 3 to operate a valve or other device 1. Modifications are described in which circulating tubes are provided for the volatile liquid so as to produce more rapid cooling.
