Abstract

402,333. Cylinders. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON., Winterthur, Switzerland.- (Assignees of Thomann, R. ; 21, Avenue do Perolles, Fribourg, Switzerland.) May 1, 1933, No. 12596. Convention date, May 12, 1932. [Class 7 (ii).] In a two-stroke engine cylinder in which the scavenging and supercharging air is admitted by a single row of ports 6, uncovered by the piston before the exhaust ports 4, the passages behind the ports 6 are such that, when the piston has moved 2/3 of the distance from the bottom dead centre to the position at which it covers the ports 4, at least 4/5 of the passage area is still available. This ensures that when non-return valves 8 open at the commencement of scavenging a similarly large area will be available. The upper and lower walls of the passages behind the ports 6 are flat and curved respectively, as shown, and in a double-acting engine the length l of uninterrupted wall on the inlet side is not less than 1/6 of the piston stroke.
