[Class 100 (ii).] Rotary intaglio machines.- In a rotary steel plate printing-machine of the type having a plate cylinder 10, and an impression cylinder or D-roll 13, the cylinders are geared together by means of a continuous gear 14, adjustably secured to the gear 11 of the plate cylinder, and two segmental gears 15, 16 meshing with the gear 14, the gear 16 being freely mounted in relation to the impression cylinder and being yieldingly connected thereto by means of a spring rigging which permits the impression cylinder to be driven frictionally by the action of the printing-plate during the printing operation, so that exact registration is obtained and blurring avoided. The gear 16 extends around the cylinder 13 to an extent which corresponds to the gap between the two ends of the impression blanket and the gear 15 is fixed to the shaft 17 of the cylinder by means of an arm 34 on a plate 35 secured to the shaft 17 by screws. The gears 15, 14 engage to ensure accurate positioning of the cylinders at the commencement of the impression. A gap 18 between the gears 15, 16 permits the gear 16 to yield in either direction during the printing operation and at the end of the operation the spring rigging returns the gear 16 to normal position. The rigging comprises a series of springs 28, 29, 30, 31 arranged between studs 20, 21, 22, 23 projecting from a collar 19 on the shaft 17, and adjustable studs 27 secured to the gear 16. The gear 14 is secured to the gear 11 by means of an annular plate 37 secured to the gear 14 by bolts 36. The gear 14 is adjustable relatively to the plates 37 by means of a screw 45, and bolts 39 secure the plate 37 to the gear 11.
