[Class 7 (ii)] [See also Group XXXIII] An air-cooled star-stype aircraft engine 13 is surrounded by an annular sheet-metal cowling 12 approximating in shape to an N.A.C.A. cowling or Townend ring and which is provided with a radial flange 17 of single thickness or of V or other section in order to prevent excessive flow of air along the inside wall of the cowling, the flange being attached to a circular band 18 lying flat over the cylinder heads. An gap 15 between the cowling and fuselage 14 forms the exit for the flow of air which enters through the open end 19 of the cowling. The flange 17 is cut away to receive the valve mechanism or rocker casings. The cowling may be built up in two or more sections.
