Abstract

445,882. Valves; cylinders. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, Westminster. Oct. 19, 1934, No. 29947. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In a two-stroke engine having a single sleeve valve E controlling exhaust ports C<1> at the upper end and scavenging ports C<4> at the lower end of the cylinder, there are no ports in the upper end of the sleeve valve, the exhaust ports being controlled by the edge of the valve, and the cylinder walls taper inwards slightly at the part above the exhaust ports. The upper end of the valve may he made thinner or tapered off, so as to be more easily expanded by the cylinder pressure to maintain a fluid-tight seating. The part of the valve which covers the exhaust ports during the end of the compression and beginning of the firing strokes is shielded by the piston from the cylinder pressure. The scavenging ports E<2> in the valve may be formed tangentially. In modifications, a separate liner may be fitted to the upper end of the cylinder bore, and the upper end of the sleeve valve may be made separate from the main body of the valve and connected thereto by a circlip. The separate upper end of the sleeve may be of austenitic steel or cast iron and the sleeve itself of carbon steel, while the cylinder is of aluminium alloy.
