Abstract
496,235. Floors. DOUGLAS, A. H., LEFEBURE, V., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 27, 1937, No. 14763. [Class 20 (iv)] A reinforced-concrete floor comprises rectangular porous mineral blocks 2 suspended between steel joists 1 by means of metal crosspieces 4, the ends of which are notched to engage with the bottom flanges 6 of the joists, the blocks being placed side by side with a cross-piece between each pair, and the arrangement being such that the lower surfaces of the blocks are brought below the level of the bottoms of the joists. The cross-pieces 4 may be of channel, I, L, inverted T-section, or may consist of vertical strips having a number of lateral projections, or horizontal strips, the ends of which are twisted through 90‹ and notched to engage with the joist flanges. If necessary, the ends of the cross-pieces may be turned upwardly to bring their lower surfaces below the level of the joists. The long narrow sides of the blocks 2 are recessed or grooved to engage with the cross-pieces 4. To ensure that the blocks fit tightly against one another, metal ribbon may be passed around neighbouring or alternate cross-pieces and drawn tight. When the blocks have been positioned, planks 8 are nailed to adjacent blocks below the joists 1 as shown, and concrete poured into the mould thus formed. If desired, metal reinforcing bars may be positioned in the spaces 9 below the joists, prior to the pouring of the concrete. The blocks 2 are made of such material and thickness that they will receive nails without spalling. Suitable blocks are cellular plaster of Paris or anhydrite plaster blocks, such as are described in Specification 381,155, Portland cement-coke breeze blocks, aerated Portland cement blocks, or agglomerated pumice blocks, which may be reinforced, if desired, by paper, pulp board, canvas, or wire gauze. Specifications 272,609 and 393,537, also are referred to.
