Abstract

499,124. Latches. BUNN, C. W. May 25, 1938, No. 15540. [Class 44] A latch of the kind in which the bolt is withdrawn by a cam or equivalent pivoting about an axis parallel to the plane of the attachment plate and at right-angles to the direction of bolt movement, is arranged so that initial movement of the handle clear of the attachment plate, to allow the hand to obtain a satisfactory grip, does not appreciably retract the bolt. As shown, the handle 23, which is of the kind having a loop normally lying flush with the attachment plate 10, rests on a shoulder 13 in a recess 12 and has a straight bar 28. The bolt 15, apertured at 17 to accommodate the cam, is guided by a bridgepiece 29, has an offset lug 18 and is shot by a spring 21 mounted on a pin 19 secured to lug 18 and slidable through a fixed lug 20. The cam, which operates against the inner face 27 of lug 18, is integral with the handle and has a surface 25 concentric with, or only slightly eccentric to, the pivot pin 24, so that initial movement of the handle compresses spring 21 not at all, or only slightly. A second cam surface 26 effects retraction of the bolt. Outward movement of the bolt is limited by abutment of cam end 30 against bridge-piece 29 and inward movement by contact of boltface 32 with the surface 31 of the handle.
