Abstract
587,979. Keys. STERNER, B. May 19, 1944, No. 9690. [Class 44] An adjustable key for cylinder locks comprises in combination a flat holder 4 in which pins 7, having their operative portions protruding from the faces of the holder, are adjustable lengthwise, each pin being provided with means which when the pins are unlocked retains it in adjusted position against accidental shifting but permits it to be forcibly displaced for adjusting purposes by means of lugs 12, grasped by the hand. The retaining means comprises leaf springs 19 engaging the teeth of racks 11, on the pins 7. The springs are locked in engagement with the pins by a sleeve 3 slidable on the holder 4. The sleeve is locked by a member 25 turnably mounted in the sleeve by a boss 26 having a milled operating head. The member 25 is provided with steps over which engage spring detents 24. Inclined surfaces on the member 25 allow the detents 24 to snap over the steps when locking the sleeve. A leaf spring 31 passing through a central slot in the member 25 holds it in locking position. The pins 7 are provided with T-section or dovetailed on the centre positions. The pins are flush with the surface of the holder 4 except where it is thinner from point A to the end and here the pins project above the surface of the holder. The holder is graduated at 14. The handle 1 of the key formed internally with the sleeve 4 is curved to ensure the key being naturally held correctly for insertion in the lock.
