Abstract

500,483. Metal astragals. HALL, H., BROWN, W., and MELLOWES & CO., Ltd. Aug. 9, 1937, No. 21831. [Classes 20 (ii) and 20 (iii)] A bar or beam for roofs. skylights, and the like comprises a pair of metal members each having two spaced longitudinal channels 5, 6, two longitudinal edges 8, 9, a long which the two members are united by fusion, and an outwardly directed flange 11. Each flange makes, with the plane passing through the edges 8, 9, an angle equal to the complement of the pitch angle of the roof or the like. In the construction shown, the channels, 5, 6 are separated by flat portions 7, the faces 12 of which lie in the common jointing plane. These portions may be spot-welded together or they may be connected by bolts or rivets. The beam is encased in a lead sheath 15, the sheath having integral fins 16 serving as flashing strips. The glazing bars 17 are flanged to receive the glass 19 and are secured by bolts 20 and nuts 21 to the flanges 11. The Provisional Specification states also that the component members of the bar or beam may be used as sills, guttering, and kerb members, for the bases and eaves of skylights and the like.
