Abstract

549,423. Grinding. NORTON CO. Aug. 27, 1941, No. 10951. Convention date, Oct. 5, 1940. [Class 60] In a lapping-machine, a strip of abrasive material passing between the work, such as a crankshaft, and a pair of shoes is automatically fed by means of a pair of feed-rollers connected by gears, one of the gears co-operating with a pawl which is operated when the shoes are opened. The apparatus shown in the Figure comprises, as described in Specification 531,128, an oscillating, laterally-adjustable arm 60 provided with pivoted arms 61, 62 which carry shoes 63, 64 and are opened and closed by means of a hydraulically-operated toggle 67, 68, a strip 93 of abrasive material being fed between the shoes and a crankshaft 13. The strip is now provided with automatic feed-mechanism comprising corrugated feed-rollers 116, 119 mounted in a bracket 115 on the shoe 63, and an arm 121 which is pivoted on the bracket and is pressed by an adjustable spring 124. A gear 129 on the roller 119 engages a gear 128 on the roller 116 and co-operates with a pawl 137 on a rock-arm 140 connected by an adjustable rod 141 to a bell-crank 142 which is pivoted on a bracket 145 on the arm 60 and is connected by a link 147 to the arm 60. At the end of a lapping operation, the shoes are opened, the pawl 137 is operated, and the strip is fed. A detent 135 prevents reverse rotation of the rollers.
