[Class 96] [Also in Groups I and IV] Fibrous material, e.g. wood, straw, esparto, bracken, or cotton is disintegrated to form paper pulp by passing it through liquid into which is discharged air &c. under pressure, the resulting turbulence removing the binder in the wood &c. and tearing the fibres apart. As illustrated, a tank 10 has vertical partitions 11, 16 forming an elongated conduit 18 ... 22 with separators 23 comprising rotating wire mesh cylinders. Fibrous material is supplied at 51, water at 48, and inert gas at 39 which supplies a header 38 and a series of perforated pipes 37 extending along the bottom of the elongated conduit 18 ... 22. Pipes .43 ... 47 convey water from the end of one section to the beginning of the next. Bleaching material may be fed to sections 20, 21 and 22.
