Abstract

567,781. Stuffing-box substitutes. STEVENSON, R. April 6, 1943, No. 5496. [Class 122 (v)] In a sealing device of the kind comprising a sleeve 68, having a flange 71, contained in a casing 67 carrying a spring 73 adapted to press the sleeve into sealing contact with a shoulder 70 on a relatively moving part, a soft packing 72 being provided between the sleeve 'and casing, a flange 75 on the casing retains the sleeve within. the casing before the device is assembled in its operative position. The opposite faces of the sleeve flange 71 may have different areas, whereby the pressure fluid to be sealed, acting on the differential areas, presses the sleeve in the required direction. The device may be inserted in a recess 53 in a bearing or may co-operate with a shoulder on a rotating shaft. In an alternative construction, the sleeve surrounds the casing 67 which is secured to the rotating member.
