A stuffing-box 2 for sealing off a pressure fluid space entered by a rotating shaft 1 comprises packing 5 which is compressed by a gland member 6 and urged by fluid pressure from the space into wedging engagement with an arcuate or conical face 7<SP>1</SP>, 8 provided on either the shaft or a sleeve 4 surrounding the shaft.
