Abstract

752.577. Stuffing-box substitutes. MAY, F. Feb. 16, 1954 [March 28, 1953], No. 4578/54. Class 122(5) A rotatable shaft 11 of a hydraulic shock absorber is sealed where it projects through a bearing in a circular boss 13 on the absorber casing by a compressible packing ring 18 arranged between the end face of the boss and an inwardly directed flange 15 of a split housing 14 which encircles the boss and is contracted to grip thereon and hold the packing tightly on the shaft and against the end face of the boss. The housing is made in two halves held together by screws 17 through lugs 16 and the bore of the housing is coned to cooperate with a similarly coned surface on the boss 13. The packing ring 18 is of rubber, split, coned on its end face 20 adjacent the boss 13. and, in its free state, is a close fit in the housing 14 so that, when the two halves of the latter are drawn together, the packing ring is compressed.
