Abstract

Vinyl thiol esters of aliphatic monocarboxylic acids are interpolymerized in bulk, solution or emulsion with an ester or anhydride of an acid containing the group <FORM:0585755/IV/1> the action of heat and/or light. Esters specified are vinyl thiol - formate, caproate, stearate, lactate, acetate and chloracetate. Other esters and anhydrides specified are dimethyl fumarate, diethyl maleate, diethyl fumarate, maleic anhydride, citraconic anhydride, diisobutyl fumarate, dioctyl fumarate, dimethyl maleate, dilauryl maleate, methyl ethyl fumarate, methyl octyl maleate, dimethyl and diethyl mesaconates and citraconates, diphenyl fumarate, dibenzyl fumarate, and dicyclohexyl fumarate. Benzoin, diethyl peroxide and diacetyl may be used as catalysts. In emulsion polymerization, polymethacrylic acid or the sodium salt of a product obtained by passing chlorine and sulphur dioxide through paraffin wax may be added. The interpolymers may be hot pressed into films or after-hydrolysed by potassium hydroxide in a benzene/methanol mixture and used as cation exchangers. Specification 568,565 and U.S.A.
