Abstract
604,114. Gas turbines. SMITH, D. M., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 24, 1944, No. 14151. [Class 110 (iii)] In a gas - turbine plant comprising a turbine driving a compressor, the exhaust from which passes to a separate power turbine or a jet propulsion nozzle and a heat exchanger for heating the compressed air before it passes to the combustion chamber, provision is made to byepass the heat exchanger when overload capacity is required. The air from a compressor 1 normally passes through a heat exchanger 6, but when extra power is required from the turbine 8, the byepass 17 is opened and additional fuel burnt in the combustion chamber 4. The power turbine 8 may be controlled by varying the inlet nozzle area which control mav be linked with the control of the byepass 17 to avoid excessive combustion temperatures. In a modification, the passage 7 may be provided with a byepass which, when open, permits at least part of the gas to pass direct to the turbine 8. This byepass may be additional to, or replace the byepass 17. In a further modification, the gases from the turbine 3 pass to a jet propulsion nozzle, the area of which may be varied to control the power of the turbine 3 and in conjunction with the byepass 17 to control the combustion gas temperatures. Both the variable inlet nozzle control and variable area propulsion nozzle may be used to facilitate starting. An arrangement in which the heat is transferred from the exhaust gas to the compressed air by an auxiliary medium is described in the Provisional Specification. Specifications 578,686, 585,959 and 586,602 are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
