Abstract

634,278. Printing-machines. HUEBNER, W. C. Jan. 5, 1948, No. 285. Convention date, May 15, 1947. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXV] In connection with means for printing on a web by means of electric lines of'force, provision is made to eliminate electrical charges upon the web prior to the web reaching the printing zone, and/or after the material has passed through the zone. The invention is described as applied to a machine as set forth in Specification 615,556 and to a machine for printing one colour only or to a machine for printing in multicolour. Each printing couple comprises an insulatedly mounted design cylinder 10 rotating around an electric discharge plate 20 arranged opposite an electric attraction cylinder 21 also insulatedly mounted and connected by a brush 24 to a source of high power D.C. The plate 20 is also connected to this source, and a double pole switch 28 controls the connections from mains 32, 33 to charge the members 20, 21, with electrical charges of opposite polarity, and a further switch 51 can be set to charge the web 26 and the inked design with charges of opposite polarity so that the ink is charged to the same polarity as the plate 20, and the web is charged to the same polarity as the attraction cylinder 21. The web is charged by plates 46, 47, and the ink by a segmental plate 36 arranged outside the cylinder 10 and a series of rods 38 connected to segmental plates mounted on the insulating supports which carry the plates 14, 15 in which the plate 20 is mounted. Before the web reaches the plates 46, 47 it is engaged on opposite sides by conductors 41, 42 mounted on insulating supports 43, 44, and connected together by a wire 45 leading to earth. As applied to a multicolour machine the once-printed web is dried and then passed through another pair of conductors 62, 63 and is then printed in another colour by a similar printing-couple, which, however, may be set so that the element 21 is positive and the element 20 negative. In all cases the ink is charged to the same polarity as the element 20, and the web as the element 21.
