A tunnel kiln for firing ceramics comprising preheating, firing and cooling zones, is adapted to be heated by gas or oil vapour burners disposed in cavities in the side walls having an exhaust flue above the cavities provided with thin front panels of refractory material so that the lower part of the kiln is directly heated and the upper part of the kiln is subjected to muffle heating. The kiln incorporates three tunnels 10 provided at each side in the firing zone B with spaced cavities 13 each formed with upwardly inclined and stepped back walls 14 and a floor 15 provided with an opening 16 flared at either end, the lower end of which receives a burner tube 19 comprising two concentric tubes, the inner tube being supplied with gas or oil vapour through a pipe 22 controlled by a valve 23 and the annular space formed between the tubes being supplied with air through a pipe 24 controlled by a valve 25. The roof 26 of each cavity is provided with a port 27 leading to a main exhaust flue 28 extending longitudinally of the tunnels and provided with a thin radiating tile 30 above the cavity. The main exhaust flue 28 feeds a lower exhaust flue 33 in the preheating zone A formed with thin radiating panels 35 and each flue 33 discharges by a duct 34 into a chamber 39 extending across the tunnels and connected to a chimney 42 by an outlet 40 in which is disposed a power-driven fan 41.
