Abstract
Ferrous tools are heated in a closed reaction vessel in a solid which contains a halide of a carbide-forming metal or which is capable of giving rise to such a halide on heating, such halide being present or being formed in a proportion not exceeding 0.2 per cent of the solid. The halide is preferably an iodide, the carbide-forming metal may be chromium, molybdenum or tungsten and heating may be effected at 750 DEG -1100 DEG C. The vessel may be sealed as described in Specification 646,638. In examples, mixtures of ferro-chromium, kaolin and potassium iodide and urea are used. Alumina or magnesia or mixtures thereof, with or without kaolin, may also form part of the solid.
