Abstract

699,443. Furniture frames. SCHAFFER, H. June 27, 1952, No. 16234/52. Class 52(ii) Furniture frames are constructed from two types of elements, one or more supporting or column elements and one or more supported or beam elements, each column element extending into a beam element and the two mutually reinforcing each other. As shown, a chair comprises a seat frame 12 and a back frame 14 constituting supported elements and each formed from'a bent strip of channel-section into a rectangular shape. The supporting elements constitute legs 24, 34, each element formed of a single length of rod or tubular metal, the front element being bent forwardly and then laterally at 28 to lie in the channel-section strip along part of the sides and along the front. The rear supporting element is likewise bent to lie along part of the sides and along part of the rear, the rod then being bent upwardly to form arms 37 and then around the back frame 14 as shown. The supporting elements may be resilient so as to grip the supported frames or may be secured thereto by screws or welding. Where the rod &c. leaves the channel, notches 30 are formed in either the rod or the flange of the channel-section to permit the parts crossing. The channels may face inwardly or may be replaced by a strip of other section such as Z section.
