708,559. Compression ignition engines; cooling cylinders. KLOCKNER-HUMBOLDT-DEUTZ AKT.-GES. Nov. 2, 1951 [Dec. 6, 1950], No. 25731/51. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) In a cylinder head of an air-cooled direct injection engine having a combustion chamber 2 with a fuel injector 5 and inlet and exhaust passages 6, 7, controlled by overhead valves, the valves and combustion chamber are arranged in a triangle relatively to one another and the combustion chamber is located on the side of the cylinder from which the cooling air flows towards the latter such that the cooling air passes around the combustion chamber 2 and flows towards a space between the inlet and exhaust passages, an incandescent ignition plug 4 being situated on the side of the chamber 2 which faces towards the valves. A guide plate 17 directs the cooling air towards fins 13 surrounding the chamber 2, and openings 21, Fig. 2, admit cooling air to the passage in the head between the inlet and exhaust passages 6, 7, which passage has cooling fins 15 therein cast integral with the head 16 and with a plate 18 overlying the head, to which plate the guide plate 17 is fixed. The ends of the fins adjacent the openings 21 are either curved towards said openings or straight but of gradually decreasing height.
