Abstract

747,087. Valves and valve-gear. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 6, 1953], No. 32159/54. Class 7(6) [Also in Groups XXVI and XXIX] An oscillating exhaust valve 14, Fig. 2, in series with a piston-controlled exhaust port 15 of a two-stroke engine cylinder 2 is engine-driven via a hydraulic system 17, 18, Fig. 3, provided with relief valves 22, 23. A receiver vane 26 on the valve spindle is oscillated from a transmitter piston 25 of greater displacement reciprocated by a crank-shaft 11 gear-driven from the engine crank-shaft, the liquid in excess at each stroke being discharged to a pipe 32 via the valves 22, 23 and an orifice 31 in a spring- loaded piston 30. Excessive system pressure, as due to fouling of the valve 14, is arranged after one, or more or less than one. stroke to drive back the piston 30, which action uncovers the pipe 32 and shuts off the engine fuel supply also. Supply valves 20, 21 keep the system 17, 18 full of liquid, and there is a short-circuit valve 24. In Fig. 4, in which supply valves 20, 21 and relief valves 22, 23, again discharging to engine stop-gear means, are positioned as shown, the receiver vane 26 is. driven by a transmitter vane 39 oscillated by a beam 35 interconnecting engine and scavenge pump pistons 3, 36, the large difference in displacement of the vanes 26, 39 being used in conjunction with a by-pass 41 to provide a phase difference between the valve 14 and piston 3. The vane 39 may be oscillated by an articulated pipe supplying to an engine crosshead oil used also as the hydraulic liquid. Reference is made to a transmitter piston driven from the engine piston, crosshead or connecting rod.
