An apparatus for preparing and filtering infusions comprises a container 2 with a removable cover 5 through which passes an axially slidable rod 4 having, at its lower end, a filter unit comprising a frame 7 consisting of a body portion with openings which supports a filter 6 and a peripheral flexible wall portion 8 divided up into tongues and urged outwardly to engage the wall of the container. The pot 2 is preferably made of glass or porcelain and hence the inside surface is slightly irregular. The lower end of rod 4 is threaded and engages a cylindrical nut 12 against which frame 7 and filter 6 are held by a nut 13 and a disc 14. Frame 7 is stamped out of metal sheet, the side wall, Fig. 3, consisting of a zone 8a and a step 8b and a second zone, the whole wall being divided by slits 9 into a series of flexible tongues which engage against the sides of the pot. The frame may be reversed so that wall 8 extends downwardly and disc 14 may be as large as the bottom of the container. In a modification, Fig. 5, a helical spring 24, with as many turns of wire as there are tongues, which has been wound one turn and then closed by soldering, is held between two discs 21, 23 between which is clamped a disc 22 with oval holes each traversed by a turn or coil of the spring. In further modifications an undulated spring may be used or the frame may be moulded from plastic.
