Abstract
854,641. Pipe couplings. SATZGER, E. Feb. 4, 1957 [Feb. 25, 1956], No. 3736/57. Class 99(1). A ball-and-socket coupling for heating-steam lines on railway vehicles comprises an annular resilient flange 11 having a root 9 resiliently attached to the ball member 1 and arranged to be pressed by steam against the inner surface of the socket member 2 to prevent the escape of steam and an annular abutment 13 arranged to support the radially inner surface of the flange in a radially outward direction. As shown, the sealing member is secured on the member 1 by a screwed nipple 10 which forms the abutment 13 which prevents the sealing lip 11 from lifting far off the surface 12 and being damaged during longitudinal movement between the members 1, 2. The latter are held together by a spherical shell 3 pivotally connected by balls 4 to the member 2 and the member 1 is connected by a stirrup clamp 5 to an inlet connection 6 on the vehicle. Ports 17 in the nipple 10 transmit the steam pressure to the flange 11 and are formed by casting deep recesses in the nipple and machining a groove 16 to intercept the recesses.
