Abstract
Cellulose ethers are made by comminuting cellulose to an average fibre length of less than 1 mm., converting the cellulose into soda cellulose in a reaction vessel by spraying it with a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide while it is being stirred, and alkylating the soda cellulose with a gaseous or liquid alkylating agent in the same reaction vessel. In the example, 1 kg. of cellulose ground to a fibre length of 130 microns is sprayed (while being stirred) with a 50% by weight aqueous solution of caustic soda at 50 DEG C. in an autoclave, the free space in which is occupied by nitrogen. The soda cellulose thus formed is then heated to 80 DEG C. and subjected to a constant methyl chloride pressure of 3-5 atm. gauge for 1 hour. The methanol formed is distilled off, the sodium chloride is removed from the crude product and the methyl cellulose is centrifuged and dried. The process reduces the consumption of caustic soda and alkylating agent.
