Abstract
A method of running-in an internal combustion piston engine comprises running the engine on a fuel composition consisting essentially of a liquid base fuel suitable for operating the internal combustion engine and having dissolved therein a minor proportion of an oil-soluble aluminium compound which can be converted to the oxide by heating. It is believed that, under the conditions prevailing during the combustion of the fuel in the engine cylinders, the aluminium compound breaks down into a highly abrasive form of aluminium oxide. As a result of the presence of this aluminium oxide, the running-in is effected in a considerably shortened time. The liquid fuel may be gasoline or diesel fuel while the aluminium compound may be an aluminium glycolate, e.g. one of the formula (C3H7O)2AlO(CH2)18OAl (C3H7O)2, or a polymeric organic aluminium compound of the general formula OnAlmXp, where X is an acylate group, m, n and p are integers, m is not less than 2, m/n is 0,75 to 2 and m/p is 0,5 to 3. In the examples, the fuel composition employed consists of a gasoline or diesel fuel containing a commercial polymeric organic aluminium compound believed to be a solution in isopropyl oleate of the substance (OAlOOCR1)3 where R is an oleyl radical. Specifications 806,113 and 825,878 are referred to.
