904,237. Catheters. ELLIOT, E. C. June 23, 1959 [Jan. 7, 1959], No. 21534/59. Class 81 (2). A device for introducing fluids into the body comprises a needle 10 which receives a catheter 11 and has a longitudinal slot 12 extending the full length of its wall, the slot being narrower than the outside diameter of the catheter but wide enough to permit lateral separation of the needle and catheter. In use the needle containing the catheter is inserted into the body, the catheter which is made of flexible material, e.g. polyethylene, then being laterally separated from the needle which is subsequently withdrawn leaving the catheter in position. The needle may have a slotted handle and the catheter may be connected to an intravenous injection apparatus or other supply of fluid by an adapter 17 which is jammed in the handle slot 16 during insertion of the needle and catheter into the body.
