Abstract
The invention comprises benzhydryl ethers (antihistaminics) of the general formula I, <FORM:0931788/IV(a)/1> (wherein R represents a hydrogen or halogen atom, or an alkyl or alkoxy group containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms), their acid addition salts (e.g. with hydrochloric, hydrobromic, sulphuric, citric, oxalic, tartaric, succinic, maleic, acetic, benzoic, hexahydrobenzoic, fumaric, methanesulphonic and naphthalene-1,5-disulphonic acids), pharmaceutical compositions containing the ethers and/or salts and an inert carrier, and a process for preparing the ethers by condensing 4-hydroxypiperidine with a 2-chloroethyl or 2-bromoethyl benzhydryl ether, optionally followed by salt formation. Examples describe the preparation of compounds I where R = H, Cl, Br, F, Ch3 and OCH3. 2-Haloethyl benzhydryl ethers (e.g. 2-bromoethyl p-chlorobenzhydryl ether) used as starting materials are prepared by condensing the corresponding diphenylchloromethane with an ethylene halohydrin.
