Abstract

932,205. Boring earth &c. PADLEY & VENABLES Ltd. Aug. 15, 1960 [Aug. 28, 1959; Oct. 5, 1959], Nos. 29431/59 and 33656/59. Class 85. A drill head comprises a hollow shank 10 adapted at one end for connection to a drill string, an enlargement 12 at the other end of the shank, arms 16 having recesses co-operating with the enlargement, a sleeve 32 tightly engaging the arms, and a driving connection between the sleeve and the shank. The arms carry cutters 16 or rollers (not shown), and have a driving connection comprising keyway and keys 34, 36. Splines 48 on the sleeve-engaging splines 46 on the shank to form the driving connection between sleeve and shank. The pin 44 of a tool joint is screwed on the shank to bear on the sleeve which may have reamer stabilizers 54. In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown), the sleeve and pin are attached to the shank by screw-threads of opposite hand, and a second sleeve having a splined connection with the shank is interposed between the pin and the first sleeve.
