Abstract
946,326. Electric resistance-heating elements. P. G. STIRLING. March 9, 1962 [March 10, 1961], No. 8833/61. Heading H5H. A helically wound fin 13 of L-shaped crosssection surrounds the sheath or forms the sheath of a tubular electric heating element. The fin may surround the metal sheath of a sheathedtype element (Fig. 1, not shown) and be retained in position by its natural resilience or by welding or soldering. In Fig. 2 the fin 13 forms a sheath for a helical heating wire 11 from which it is insulated by interlocking beads 12 which may be supplemented by, or replaced by, a sleeve of a silicone material or fibre glass. Parts of the fin may be bent as indicated at 14 (Fig. 3) to provide surfaces for engagement with an object to be heated. In other embodiments the finned element is enclosed in contact with a casing for use as an immersion heater or to form a helical passage for use in a flow heater.
