Abstract

The filling capacity of tobacco is increased by subjecting it to a liquid solvent from the group comprising aliphatic, cyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, ethers, esters, chlorinated solvents, and miscible combinations of the solvents. The tobacco to be treated has a moisture content of 10%-20% and the treatment is carried out at atmospheric pressure. The tobacco may be allowed to stand in the solvent or the solvent may be flowed or sprayed, continuously or intermittently, through or on the tobacco, the solvent being maintained at a predetermined temperature throughout treatment. Quantitative examples are given in which toluene, methylene chloride and n-hexane are used as solvents. Specification 413,942, German Specification 301,439 and U.S.A. Specifications 1,577,768, 2,048,624 and 2,227,863 are referred to.
