Abstract
960,054. Two-stroke engines. W. R. LONGCROFT-NEAL. March 21, 1963 [April 26, 1962], No. 15903/62. Heading F1B. In a two-stroke I.C. engine having a coaxial cylindrical extension 10, Fig. 1, beyond the cylinder head 7, and a transfer passage 15 in a piston rod 5 interconnecting working and auxiliary pistons 4 and 14, working fluid is drawn into at least one admission port 12 in the peripheral wall of the extension 10 into space 18 and then transferred into cylinder 1 as the piston rod is reciprocated through the cylinder head. In the t.d.c. position as shown in Fig. 1 the auxiliary piston 14 has opened port 12 to admit working fluid to space 18, the transfer passage 15 is closed and the exhaust port 3 is shut off by piston 4. After ignition, the piston 4 moves towards b.d.c. and one port 16 emerges from cylinder head 7 to effect transfer of the working fluid from space 18 to cylinder 1 the exhaust port 3 being opened and admission port 12 being closed. In another embodiment arranged as a double acting engine the extension 10, Fig. 3 is arranged between coaxial cylinders 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, and piston rod 5 interconnects both working pistons 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, and the auxiliary piston 14. Fuel/air mixture may be drawn into admission port 12 and the engines may be arranged for spark ignition or fuel injection. The cylinder head cooling fins may be omitted.
