In an apparatus for packing and weighing fibrous material, material is fed by a conveyer (Fig. 1) to a trough 5 which is reciprocated by a crank arrangement 8, 9a coupled to the conveyer drive and has a bottom discharge opening to distribute material into a container 2 mounted below on rails 14 carried by a weigh platform 15 (Fig. 10). Means are provided responsive to a predetermined load in the container including a mercury switch 48 operated by displacement of the weigh platform to cause one of the rails 14 to be lowered to transfer the loaded container to an inclined discharge railway 3, also means to close a sliding door 9 of the trough discharge opening pending the arrival of an empty container below it. The containers have rollers 12 to enable them to travel when empty along guide rails 4 to the loading/weighing position and rollers 13 to run on the discharge rails 3 to a collecting station 2a. Fig. 10 shows the position of the short rails 14 during weighing and in chain dotted lines the post weighing position. One of the rails 14 is supported on a lever 19 pivoted at 20 and supported at its other end on a pivotal U bracket 21. The U bracket support is withdrawn by a solenoid 29 on a signal from the weigher (not described) when a predetermined load is attained thereby allowing the lever 19 to pivot downwards and lower the rails 14 to the level of the upper end of the rails 3. As the container runs down the rails 3 it triggers a micro switch 36 thereon which permits a solenoid to release a stop on the rails 4 and allow an empty container to run to the loading position.
