Description

vdiluted tapes anni @pitre JOHN LANGTREE, OF NEW YORK, N,
Letters Patent No. 4107,067, dated September 6, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o! the same.
To all 'lt-hom it 'lnaycolicerm Be il: known that I. JOHNLANGTREE, of the city, coiility, aild State of New York, have invented a newI and useful Improvement in Paper l'oi- Writing, Print-f ing, and other purposes, oi' wllicli the lollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beilig had to the accompanying drawing forming part. oi' t-llis specification, alid which represents a face or outside view ofa sheet of legal cap paper made in accordance with lily improvement. 'i
vMy iiivelitioll, wllile applicable to various kinds of blallk pa per for writing, priiltillg, and otller purposes, both for ilse in a boulidand loose forni, it will here sill'- iice to describe with reference to paperi'or manuscript use ill separate sheets, as, tin-instance, legal cap, foolscap, aiid letter paper.
The main object of the invention is to economize the ltime, labor, aiid expense wllicli has heretofore been attendant upon numbering the lilies or spaces on various kinds ot' paper for writing, printing, and other pnl-poses, and which has heretotine beeli done by writing or printing the numbers thereon at the tiliie ot' using the paper.
The invention consists in pressing oi' wateleinarking' applicable to papel' in wliicll thesheets areiblded lliidway ot' their length or breadth.
l-lle invention also elllbraces an arrangement of the numbers within a pressed or water-marked iiiargilial lille or entwining border, .preferably of a wave or chain pattern;surmountcd with an eagle or other suitable device, whereby the numbers are inclosedin separate spaces, to indicate their respective lines, aild the lisual labor and expense ot' riilillg or printing the paper with a marginal line or lines is thereby avoided.
Releri'ing to the accompanying drawing- A represents the outside i'ace oi' a sheet (shown olily in part) of legal cap, which may have its cross lilies u, b, and c, either ruled, printed, or water-marked on the papel'. A
Opposite these lilies in the margin are the nuinbers, which indicate in regular numerical Order the several cross-lines in succession. These nullibers are formed in the paper by pressing or water-marking them therein, and may be dolle during the process ot' nlalilitilctnring, calcndering, or finishing the paper by means ot' suitable metallic rolls, plates, or cylinders, wit-h Ythe nulnbers raised thereon, as other legible water-marks have been iliade in paper, and so that the said numbers will 'be pressed or water-marked into the. paper during the passage olthc paper between the said rolls, plates, or cylinders.
The cross-lines a, b, alid c, also the marginal linc d,
cate, and it' the latter, maybe dicrently arrallged,-
according to the told made in the paper, the object of' duplicating the numbers being to provide i'or writing or prillting on both sides of the page, said numbers lislially beginning at the top and running down tothe bottom.
ln the case oi' legal cap, which is to be written on both-sides, aild which is usually .folded over at the top c, whereby the designating numbers for both sides 'ot'tlle page would thus come in opposite lilies, exposing them to run into ol' mar one aiiother,`[ propose to arrange the line ot` ilulnbers oli the one side. nearer to the edge than on thefothei', ,or to have onel set of .the duplicate numbers above the lilies land the other below them, and to make said duplicate numbers reversed, wllereby each set ot' lililllbers will be separate and distinct from the otller, and be visible in proper position on the side ofthe page to which they respectively belong.
Said duplicate numbers may either be alike, so as to ilidicate count from the top ot' the one side ot' the page, and from the bottolli of the other or opposite side thereof'. or they may be arranged to l'uli from top t-o bottoni ot' both sides of the page.
\Vliat is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. lNi-iting, printing, or other paper, having the numbers which indicate the lines that run across its face pressed or water-lnarked in the margin ot' thc paper, substantially as specilied.
2. The arrangement ot'dnplicate ilulnbers pressed or water-marked in the margin of the paper opposite the lilies or spaces in the latter, essentially as and t'or the purpose herein described.
3. The arrangement ol the pressed or water-marked nulnbers, which indicate the lines in theI paper, Within a pressed or Yeller-marked marginal line or border of a waved or cliain-lilie pattern, substantially as specitied.
