CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 35,081, dated August 4, 1903.
Application filed August 20,1902. Serial No. 120,894. (No model.)
Book, of which the following is a specification.
As is well known, in the ordinary checkbook now in general use stubs are employed to which the checks are removably attached, these stubs being used for keeping data regarding the checks after they are made out and detached. Among other things it is the custom to place on each stub the amount on deposit and the amount drawn by the check. As a result it is necessary to strike a balance on each stub and transfer it to the next. This, besides being considerable trouble, consumes a great deal of time, and it is necessary to preserve the stubs after all the checks have been used, in order that returned and canceled vouchers may be traced and audited. This latter operation is very tedious and unsatisfactory, especially with large accounts.
One object of the present invention is .to overcome all the above objections and at the same time provide a check-book that is much more convenient in shape than those ordinarily used.
A further object is to provide simple and eflicient means for detachably securing a pad of check-blanks in place within the cover of the book, and thus an ornamental and serviceable cover can be provided which can be used over and over, while new checks and record-sheets can replace those filled and detached.
Two embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form with the cover raised. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View. Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of one of the cover-leaves, showing the slot therein. Fig. 5 is a similar .view of one end of the backing-sheet for the pad. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of construction. Fig. 7 is a sectional View through the same. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal sectional view through the cover.
of the recordsponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In each embodiment of the invention a cover 10 is employed comprising the usual leaves 11 and 12. Within this cover are fastened a plurality of leaves in the form of blank checks 13.
In the form shown in the first five figures of the drawings the inner face of the leaf 12 of the cover, which is foldable over the faces of the checks 13, is provided at its outer edge with a guideway 14:, preferably formed by doubling the edge of said leaf inwardly, as shown at 15, and fastening its ends to the leaf, as .illustrated at 16. The outer flap 15 :has printed thereon a plurality of titles, which are substantially the same as those employed on the stubs of the ordinary check-book, these titles beinglocated in separate spaces formed upon the flap by the lines 17. At the lower corners'of. the leaf 12 are arranged pockets formed by diagonal slits 18, cut in the inner wall of the leaf.
Detachably secured to the leaf 12 is a record-sheet 19, the outer edge of which is fitted in the guideway 14, the inner corners detachably fitting in the slits 18. This sheet is entirely separate from the book and covers the inner face of the leaf 12. It is not only provided with the usual horizontal ruling, but it is also ruled vertically, as shown at 20, these vertical lines dividing the face of the sheet into columns which aline with the titles upon the fiap 16, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. .In actual practice both faces of the sheet are correspondingly ruled, and in the embodiment shown two sets of similar titles are employed. The horizontal lines are preferably numbered, as shown in Fig. 1, and the checks are of course numbered in the usual manner. The data of each check is therefore placed upon the correspondingly-numbered line, so that said data may be readily located. This arrangement, however, may be changed as desired. For instance, a slightly-different form is shown in Fig. 6.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the first five figures the check-blanks 13 are arranged in the form of a pad secured to a backing-sheet 21, the ends of which are longitudinally slitted, as shown at 22 in Fig. 5, to form oppositely-extending tongues 23, arranged within the end edges of said backing-sheet. The inner wall of the cover-leaf 11 is provided contiguous to its opposite ends with transverse slits 24, the ends of which are curved at 25, thus forming pockets into which the tongues can be detachably slipped, thereby fastening the pad in place upon the cover 11.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 6, 7, and 8 the pockets 18, shown in the first embodiment, are dispensed with and side guideways 14: are formed by turning inwardly the ends 15 of the cover 12. In this instance the record-sheet is slipped in from the hinged edge of the cover-leaf 12, its opposite ends engaging in the guideways let, while its outer edge is arranged within the usual guideway 14. As an evidence of the manner in which the ruling and titles may be changed it will be noted that the arrangement shown in Fig. 6 is slightly different from that illustrated in Fig. 1. In this latter embodiment the manner of securing the leaves or blank checks is slightly different. In this instance they are arranged in ordinary book form, but are made detachable by a line of perforations 13.
The manner of using these books will be readily apparent. As each check is numbered and made out it is listed upon the record-sheet, which is in very convenient position for this purpose. When the check thus made out is torn off, the next succeeding blank occupies the same relative position. The data is arranged in columns, so that the balance need only be struck when the sheet is filled. It will therefore be seen that this arrangement does away with the objectionable features of the ordinary check-book as noted in the preliminary portion of the specification. As the canceled checks are returned the data may be readily found without the necessity of looking througha number of stubs. Furthermore, when the sheet has been filled upon one side it can readily be reversed and when entirely filled may be filed away for future reference. As a result the record of a large number of checks may be kept in a comparatively small space. Further than this, the structure does away with the necessity of stubs, and the book is therefore of a convenient size to be kept in the usual compartments provided in desks, &c., for books of this nature, or it can be conveniently carried in a pocket.
The construction shown in the first five figures is decidedly preferable for some purposes, as a nice leather cover may be constructed within which the checks and recordsheets can be secured and replaced as rapidly as filled.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction, operation, and many advantages of the herein-described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is=
1. In a check-book of the class described, a cover having a set of titles, a plurality of detachable leaves in the form of checks, and a record sheet removably attached to the cover and ruled into columns that aline with said titles.
2. In a check-book of the class described, a cover having its outer edge doubled inwardly to form a guideway, said doubled edge being provided with a plurality of titles, a plurality of detachable leaves in the form of check-blanks, and a record-sheet fitted in the guideway and ruled into columns, said columns being alined with the titles.
3. In a book, the combination with a cover, of a pad having a backing-sheet and means for detachably securing the backing-sheet to the cover, said means comprising spaced pockets arranged in one, and tongues located upon the opposite ends of the other, to engage in thereof, of a pad having a backing-sheet, and I tongues cut from the backing-sheet within the end edges thereof and detachably engaging the slits in the cover.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
