To all whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES Reiten, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county oit Racine and State of Tvl/visconsin, have invented new and useful improvements in Footwear, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates lto improvements in boots, shoes and other footwear and has particular reference to a protector for boots, shoes, etc., which in use are subjected to unusual or very rough wear.

The invention comprises a protector' plate which provides the sole and heel portion, and a continuous upstanding l[lange through which passes the rivets or other means :tor securing the protector to the shoe.

l/Vith the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature oit' the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

The heel 2 is centrally reduced to provide a pocket Ll, the said pocket being adapted to receive a suitable cushion member which is designated by the numeral 5. It will be noted by reference to llig. 3 el the drawings that the pocket is designed to occupy the full space provided for the heel, and that the sides or outer edges oli the said heel are arranged at an angle as designated by the numeral 6. The protector is preferably constructed of aluminum or other light metal and the said protector is provided with an upstanding marginal guard or flange 7. their bil'urcated ends are bent in opposite direction so that the shoe is securely connected with the protector.

By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, `it will be noted that the vamp ot' the shoe has its lower edges bent inwardly upon the bottom ol the. protector and the said inturned portions are provided with a plurality ol upwardly extending nails 1l, the latter being adapted to engage with the insole l2 ol the said shoe. The insole l2 is termed of some coarse material and the foot of the wearer is protected through the medium oi a second insole 13 which is constructed of some sott material such as hair or the like.

The under tace of the protector is serrated upon what may be termed the sole and the heel oit said protector, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and designated by the numerals 1land l5 respectively. The toe portion ol the protector is provided with a plurality of downwardly extending lugs 1G, the said lugs and the serrations adapted to serve as means 'for preventing accidental slipping olf the user oit the device. It will be noted that the bottom or sole portion 'l is rounded so that the said sole serves as a rocker which provides :tor the :tree movement or elasticity of the device when positioned upon the toot et the wearer, thus not only adding to the comfort ot the wearer but also ail'ording what may be termed propelling means which greatly assists the wearer in walking'.

Having thus 4fully described the said invention what I claim is In a. device oi the class described including a metallic protector for shoes provided with an upstanding continuous marginal guard or flange having a series 0l.3 perforations, means passing through said perforations and through the Vamp oiZ lie shoe for seeming the guard thereto, the upper of the shoe lia-ving its lowef extremity bent in- Waidly and provided with a plu'ality of nails, an insole adapted to be engaged by the nails of the inturned poi-tion of the shoe and extending ove-if and in engagement with. the cushioningv member, and L second insole constructed of some soft material adapted to overlie the rst named insole.
