UNITED STATES #PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK s. JAMES, or onassvnrmnv, CALIFORNIA.
I oD-E TnAcToR.
To all whom it may concern 'Be it known that I, FRANK S. JAMES, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Grass Valley, Nevada and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rod-Extractors, a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rod extractors and has particular application to a device of this class whereby rods, drills and other like tools may be extracted or withdrawn from the ground in theevent of the same becoming stuck.
In' carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a device of the character described which will embody among other features a frame having a fulcrum point at one end and a handle at the opposite end, a gripping block pivoted within the frame and adapted to grip the rod and maintaining the same plane in the swinging movement of the frame about the fulcrum point whereby the gripping block will be elevated and the rod withdrawn in the movement of the frame.
It is also my purpose to provide a rod extractor which will express the desired fea tures of simplicity, efliciency and durability, one which may be manufactured and marketed at a minimum expense.
IVith the above recited and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of: parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope" of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a top plan view of a rod extractor constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view there through. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation showing the rod extractor in use.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing indetail the numeral 1 designates a frame constructed of any suitable material and preferably oblong in outline. Secured to one end of theframe and depending therefrom is a fulcrum block 2 while connected with the opposite .endof the frame and eX- tending outwardly and upwardly therefrom is a handle 3 by means of which the frame may be swung about the fulcrum block.
of which the following is in the county of Specificationof Letters Iatent' Patented Aug; 18 1914 Application filed. September 19, 1913.
Serial No. $90,807.
The numeral 4 designates a gripping block which, in this instance, conforms to the shape of the frame 1 and fits within the latter. This block is relatively short as compared with the length of the frame and is formed with anelongated slot 5 merging into anirregular opening 6 at one end thereof, such opening being designed to receive the rod to be extracted. This gripping block 4; is pivoted within the frame 1 by means of a pin 7 passed through the frame and the block and the opposite ends of the gripping block are spaced apart equal distances from the ends of the frame 1 and 6 nounted for swinging movement upon the pin 7 within the slot 5 in the gripping block is a jaw 8 raving one end toothed as at 9 and designed to move into the opening 6.
In the use of the device the jaw 8 is swung to open position, that is, the toothed end thereof is moved out of the oening 6, and the block 4r slipped over the e 'l of the rod to be extracted, the rod being passed through the opening 6. After the block is placed upon the rod the jaw 8 is swung to closed position so that the toothed end thereof bites against the adjacent portion of the rod. In this position of the parts the fulcrum block 2 rests upon the ground while the handle 3 is within a convenient reach of the operator, the fulcrum bloclr and frame resting in a horizontal plane. As pressure is applied to the handle to swing the frame about the ful crum block, the gripping block maintains a horizontal position and moves in an upward direction thereby carrying the rod upwardly, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4.
' While I have shown and described one particular form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and de lineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
' I claim A rod extractor comprising a frame having a fulcrum block at one end thereof and a handle at the opposite end, a gripping block within said frame and capable of swinging movementtherein and formed with an elongated slot and an irregular opening communicating with the slot at one end, a
jaw Within the slot in said gripping block In testimony whereof I afiix my signature and capable of swinging movement therein in presence of two Witnesses.
