Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 3, 1908. Serial No. 465,862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. PUTNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunshine, in the county of Bighorn and State of lVyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bullet- Molds; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved bullet mold for molding bullets with hollow bases and the object thereof is to provide a simple and eflicient device of this character adapted to mold both smooth and grooved bullets and having an adjustable die for making the hollow bases of varying depths to fit bullets of different caliber.
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a bottom plan view of a mold constructed in accordance with this invention, with the jaws thereof in open position; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the handle members broken off F 3 is a longitudinal section taken on line 8-3 of Fig. 1.; Fig. t is an end elevation; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the die attachment detached.
In the embodiment illustrated, two pivotally connected mold sections 1 and 2 are shown provided with handles 3 and 4t respectively, said members being connected by a pivot bolt A bar 6 is pivotally connected at one end to the bolt 5 and has an offset 7 formed therein to dispose its free end in a plane below the lower faces of the mold sections 1 and 2. The off-set free end of this arm or bar is provided with a screw-threaded aperture in which a bullet die 9 of any desired shape is adjustably mounted preferably by means of a screw threaded stem 10 and a locking nut 11 for holding said die in adjusted position. The outer end of said stem is preferably provided with a screw driver recess 12. A link 13 is connected with the free end of the arm 6 beyond the die 9 and extends laterally 011 opposite sides of said arm and is provided at its opposite ends with two longitudinally extending slots as 14 through which screws or headed studs as 15 are designed to be passed for connecting said link to the opposite mold sections and permitting said sections to move freely relatively to said link. This link 13 forms a stay guide for the outer end of the arm or bar 6 and is designed to limit the extent of movement of the mold sections 1 and 2 and to hold the die in central operative position.
In the operation of this improved mold, the die carrying attachment being secured to the pivot bolt 5 of the mold preferably constructed as shown, the die 9 extends between the sections 1 and 2 into the bore thereof and is adjustable therein to vary the length of the bullet to be formed within the mold. The sect-ions are then closed and the molten metal is poured through the opening in the mold at the opposite end thereof and after it becomes hardenechthe sections are opened scissors like and the link 13 holds the die 9 in a central position causing the bullet to be readily separated therefrom.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described and ascertained the nature of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
A bullet mold comprising two sections pivotally connected and provided with operating handles, a die carrying arm connected at one end with the connecting pivot of said sections, a link mounted on the other end of said arm and extending laterally on opposite sides thereof and provided with longitudinally extending slots, and headed studs pass ing through said slots and connecting said link with the opposite mold sections to guide said die and hold it in central position relatively to the mold sections.
