, Letters Patent No. 113,382, dated April 4, 1871.
lMPFiOVEMEIiIfI IN CRIB ATTACHMENTS FR BEDSTEADS.
The Schedule referred to inthese Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HENRY LAURENCE WILSON, of Auburn, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use- "ful Improvements in Orib Attachments to Bedsteads,
of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
The invention relates to that class of crib attachmentsfor bedsteads which consists of a bottom pro vided with a hinged side and adjustable head or footboard, the device Ybeing secured to the side of the bedstead by means of a clamping-iron, sliding clamp, and follower working on a thread 0n the shank of the clamping-iron.
The object of the invention is to furnish a crib to be afxed to the sides of the bed of suoli construction that an infant may be safely placed therein, be accessible to the occupants, and yet not take up any portion of the bed.
The device also may adord a seat beside the bedstead when not otherwise used.
.Description of Accompanying Drawing. Figure 1 is a.side elevation of the invention.
Figure 2, an end view of the saule. Figure 3, a vertical section through the line m n.
General Description.
A in the accompanying drawing represents the side of the attachment provided at one or both ends, as desired, with a staple, s, or other suitable means to receive the hook b in the head or foot-board, which is secured in au upright position by means of the staple x and the pins c, fitting into apertures in the platform of the crib, all arranged so that the board B shall be Hush, or nearly so, with the ends contiguous to which it is secured.
The side A is hinged at d to the front of a bar or block on the under surface of the outer side ofthe bottom X, and when closed lies upon the upper surface thereof.
The part X is provided, as aforesaid, withvthe bar C or blocks in which are rigidly secured two or more metal arms, D, projecting inward horizontally under vthe platform X, and at right angles with the bar to `which they are secured.
The opposite extremity of these arms D has a rectangular downward bend, Z.
At a proper distance above its junction with the bar the arm D is provided with a thread upon which revolves the follower E, through the center of which is out a female thread corresponding with the male thread on the arm D.
Between the outer end of the follower E, and fitting snugly through the horizontal conter upon the arm D, is a sliding clamp, F, which extends to within a proper distance from the exterior vertical surface of the bend Z, andv has a at-faced shoulder, x, the height of which slightly exceeds the length of the vertical part of the arm D, to which, when in operation, the shoulder stands opposite.
The part X may be hinged to the bar O, or it may be ixedly secured thereto.
The side-board A and bottom X may be provided with the staple s `and apertures to receive the pins c at each end, so that the same head-board may be used at either end and on either side of the bed.
Operation.
and the front vertical surface of the bend Z, thus affording a well-supported and safe crib.
If it be desired to use the invention as a seat, it is only necessary to remove the head-board and close the side A down upon the part X.
` Claims.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combined crib and seat attachment for bedsteads, consisting of the head-board B, side and bottorn A and X hinged to the bar 0, or to one another, in combination with thearms D provided with the bends Z, and having on thelnlthe followers E and sliding clamp F, all arranged and operated in the manner and for the uses illustrated and indicated.
2. The combination of the arm D, as described, with the follower E and sliding clamp F, asa means of attachment, substantially as illustrated and indicated.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvements in crib attachments to bedsteads as above described, 1 have hereunto set my hand and seal this 17th day of February, 1871.
A. F. HoRNEn, B. J. RIGKEE.
