COMBINED CAMPING OUTFIT AND BOX THEREFOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 6, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ARcHIBALD D. CAMP- BELL and LAWRENCE S. CAMPBELL, both citi- Zens of the United States of America, both residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Camping Outfit and Box Therefor; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to combined camping outfit and box therefor and it may be said to consist in the provision of the novel and advantageous features and in the novel and improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts and devices as will be apparent from the description and claim which follow hereinafter.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction whereby a folding tent may be attached to and carried in a box adapted to contain a camping outfit, and which permits of the tent and camping outfit being compacted in the boX so as to be always ready for use, easily transported from place to place, and which permits of the tent being easily and quickly set up and taken down when desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction for the frame of the tent, and for mounting a bed in the box and adjusting the same.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a novel and improved construction of the nature specified which is simple and economical to manufacture, strong and durable, attractive in appearance, and convenient and effective in use.
Other objects and the advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a careful consideration of the following description of the preferred form of the construction embodying the invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the tent and truck; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a side elevational View of the truck carrying the camping outfit; Fig. 4 is a rear end view of the box and of side portions of the tent frame thereon; Fig. 5 is a broken sectional enlarged sectional view taken on the line 1111 of Fig. 8; Fig. 12 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 1212 of Fig. 2; Fig. 13 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 1313 of Fig. 10; Fig. 11 is an enlarged broken sectional view taken on the line 1 114L of Fig. 13; and Fig. 15 is a view of the adjustable crosspiece of the tent frame.
The box 16 may be suitably mounted onwheels 17 and provided with a handle or tongue 18 whereby it may be hand or horse drawn or attached as a trailing truck to an auto vehicle. A pivoted leg 19 may be provided on the tongue 18 to support the front portion of the box 16.
The forward part of the tent frame consists of foldable trusses made up of erectable bars 20 and 21 of angle iron which have one end portion thereof mounted on pivots 22 arranged on extensions 23 at the corners of the box 16; said bars 20 and 21 having the other end portion thereof connected by longitudinal bars 2a of angle iron which longitudinal bars may be connected to the bars 20 and 21 by brace bars 25.
The rear part of the tent frame consists of longitudinal bars 26 of angle iron which are adjustably and detachably connected to the forward part of the tent frame by means of pins 27 on the bars 24 which pins are adapted to fit into any one of the spaced openings 28 in the forward end portion of the bars 26, and a rear end frame which is connected to the bars 26 by hinged joints 29 and which consists of the upright bars 30 which latter are connected at the top thereof by the cross bar 31 having a suitable hinged joint 32 therein. Brace bars 83 may be connected between the cross bar 81 and the bars 30. In order that the bars 26 may be turned freely relatively to the uprights 30 and folded against the latter, the hinge joints 29 preferably consist of right-angled pieces 8st which are connected to the uprights 30 by pivots 35, and connected to the bars 26 by pivots 36. The top portions of the bars QO may be connected by the tie cord 37 therebetween, and by the tie cords 38 attached to the box 16.
The bed is arranged in the top part of the box 16 and preferably consists of the mattress 39 arranged on spring frame 40 which rests on crosspicces 41 disposed at the ends of the box 16. Provisions and the various camping utensils and articles such as the folding cot 42 and window screens 43 may be stored in the space below the bed in the box 16. The bed may be held in raised position by means of hooks 44; which are pivotally mounted on the bars 21 and adapted to pass through rings 15 on the spring frame 4E0 of the bed. The box 16 may have on the rear end thereof a door 46 which permits ready access to a tank of water, kit of tools,
etc, placed within the box adjacent to thedoor 46.
The tent canvas or other suitable fabric 47 has the lower front end portion thereof suitably secured to the box 16 and it is formed to fit over the tent frame when the latter is set up. In folding the canvas 47 the rear end portion overlays the forward end portion, see Figs. 6 and 9.
On the extensions 23 of the box 16 are pivotally mounted the arms 48 which are provided at the outer end thereof with eyes 19 through which pass cords 50 which latter have one end thereof secured to the upper part of the arms 20 and 21 and have the other end thereof secured to the lower part of the box 16. The end portion 51 of ti e arms 18 preferably extend freely into hollow bars 52 extending longitudinally of the box 16. The bars 21 are provided at the top thereof with oppositely disposed notches 58 adapted to receive the end portions of a preferably arched cross-piece 54. A tarpaulin or other suitable covering may be placed on the box 16 and held in place by straps 56.
From the foregoing description and the drawings the manner of use and the advantages of the construction will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art. It will be understood that in setting up the tent the side portions of the forward part of the tent frame are first turned up, then the rear part of the tent frame may be joined to the forward part, then the rear portion of the canvas which is folded to overlay the front portion of the canvas may be moved to position on the rear part of the tent frame, then the arms 48 may be turned to incline downwardly-see Fig. 41to cause the cords 50 to hold the bars 20 and 21 rigidly in upright position and at the same time move the bars 52 to take up any sag in the side walls of the canvas, and then the crosspiece 5st may be disposed in position in the notches 53 of the bars 21. to take up any sagging of the roof portion of the canvas. It will be seen that the erosspiece 54: and also the bars 26 are detachable and may be adjusted to allow for expansion or contraction of the canvas.
The construction which has been particularly illustrated and described admits .of many minor changes and modifications wherefore the right is reserved to all such changes and modifications as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention which is defined. in the appended claim.
We claim:
A camping outfit comprising the combination of a box, a tent frame composed of a forward part and a rear part detachably connected, said forward part being mounted on said box and including trusses which are arranged at the sides of the box and folda-ble so that they can be placed down into said box, and said rear part having support independent of said box and being collapsible so that it can be placed in said box, a cover adapted to fit over the frame and having the lower part of its forward portion attached to the box, the rear portion of said cover being fitted over the rear part of the tent frame and adapted to overlay said forward portion when the tent frame and cover are compacted and placed in the box.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, this 13th day of October A. D. 1914:.
