H. STRAUSS. Folding Head Rest. No. 241,748. Patented May 17,1881.
. INVBNTOR:
BY Cw ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FOLDING H SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed March To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH SrRAUss, of Niiremberg, Germany, have invented anew and Improved Folding Head-Rest, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a head-rest which can be folded very compactly for transportation, can be erected in a short time, and is strong and rm.
The invention consists of a head-rest formed of a sheet or piece of fabric attached to a frame, which is so constructed that the sheet is held inclined, and its tension can be regulated at will.
In the accompanying diawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved head-rest, showing it erected, the foldingpillow beingshown in section. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same, showing it partiallyv folded.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The uprights A A are hinged to the baserails B B in such a manner that they can be folded down upon these base-rails B B, as shown at a in Fig. 1. The inner sides of the uprights A A, facing toward the base-rails B B, are provided with a series of recesses, C C, to receive the ends of braces D, which are hinged to about the middle of the upper surface of the baserails B B. The rear sides of these uprights are provided with a series of dovetail mortises, E E, into which the dovetail-tenons at the ends of the transverse rails F and G t. The base-rails B B are united at the ends opposite those to which the uprights A A are hinged by a transverse rail, H, pivotedto eachfof theserails B. A sheet, L,of some p fabric-rubber, cloth, or similar materialis fastened to the outer edge of the transverse rail H, and the other end of this sheet is attached to the transverse rail G.' The tenon of this rail G is provided with a perforation to permit the pin J to pass through this tenon intowthe upright A. i
The folding mattress or pillow K may be composed of one or more sections, as shown. The outer coating of the mattress or pillow K is made of rubber or oil-cloth or leather.
EA D REST.
Patent No. 241,748, dated May 1?, 1881.
17, 1881. (No model.)
The head-rest iser'ected and folded as follows: When not injuse the frame of the headrest is folded, the sheet L and the mattress are wrapped around it, and all is held together by a shawl-strap. If the head-rest is to be usedthe baserails B B are turned outward from the transverse rail H, so as to form a rectangular hase-frame. The uprights A are turned up and held by the braces D. The tenons of the transverse rail F are then placed into one of the upper mortises, E, of the uprights A, according to the desired inclination of the head-rest. The sheet L is passed over this rail .F, andis stretched, and the transverse rail G, to which the sheet L is fastened, is passed into the corresponding mortise and locked by means of the pins J.
The rail F may be padded or made elastic, if desired.
This head-rest is very convenient for travel ers, and is also to be used in tents on` lawns in camping out, &c.-
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A folding head-rest composed of a horizontal frame and a vertical frame jointed to gether, and a flexible sheet, L, extended over the top edge of the vertical frame and connected to a horizontal bar made vertically-adjustable on the said vertical frame to regulate the tension of the sheet, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the base-rails B B, the uprights A, beams D, and transverse rails F, G, and H, of the sheet L, as herein shown and'deseribed, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a portable folding head-rest, the frame composed of the base-rails B, the uprights A, braces D, the pivoted transverse rail H, and the adjustable transverse rails F and G, all
combined substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
HEINRICH STRAUSS.
