Description

G. CHROIVIY.
HITCHING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. I7. I9I9.
Patented June 3, 1919.
wth/Leases GEORGE CHROMY, OF STEWART, MINNESOTA.
HITGHING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 3, 1919.
Application filed. February 17, 1919. Serial No. 277,458.
To all whom it may concern:
i Be it kno-wn that I, GEORGE CHROMY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stewart, in the county of McLeod and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hitching Devices, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention has reference to a hitching device for stock.
The object of the invention is to produce a simple means whereby to easily engage the ring on the halter strap of an animal to secure the animal to a post or manger, the device comprising means whereby the halter strap may be readily released.
It is a further object of the invention to produce a hitching device comprising a member which is secured to a post or manger and which has a bifurcated outer end, while between the arms provided by the said bifurcation there is extended a toothed portion. Piv'oted in the bifurcation is a handle member having a toothed jaw co-acting with the toothed extension or jaw of the first mentioned member, while spring means are employed for holding the jaws in engaging position, the teeth of the jaws being arranged in staggered relation with each other and so positioned that the same define straight shoulders and inclined walls between the shoulders whereby the ring on the halter strap of an animal may be inserted between the arms of the bifurcation and to be engaged by the teeth of the jaw to securely lock said ring therebetween.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, showing the ring of a halter strap engaged by the jaws of the improvement.
In the showing of the drawing the improvement is illustrated as attached to a manger, only a portion of which being deemed necessary to illustrate the application of the device. In this connection it is to be stated that the device may be attached to a post or to any other convenient support.
A portion of the manger is indicated by the numeral 1. Straddling the sides of the manger are arms 2-2 of a block or casting v3, the portion of the block or casting at the terminal of the arms 2 resting on the upper edge of the manger board. The block or casting 3 is comparatively wide and is provided, at its upper portion with a preferably angular-ly arranged iining spaced arms 4-4 arranged at a right anglel with respect to the arms 2-2. The arms'4 are formed at the ends of the block or casting, and the said block or casting, between the said arms and preferably spaced a suitable distance inward fromthe said arms is provided with an extension which provides a jaw and which is designated by the numeral 5. The jaw, upon its upper edge is formed with spaced teeth that define straight shoulders 6 and angle portions 7 between the shoulders. The block or casting 8, between the arms 4 thereof is rounded upwardly as at 8 to its connection with the jaw 5 and this rounded portion may be provided with one or more teeth 9 similar to the teeth of the jaw. The arms 4, above the upward and rearwardly rounded wall 8 are preferably formed, upon their inner faces with bosses through which passes a pivot member 9 for a handle 10. The handle is bifurcated extension deprovided with an extension in the nature of a jaw which is designated by the numeral 11 and which overlies the jaw 5. The lower face of the jaw 11 is provided with teeth defining straight shoulders 12 and angle walls or surfaces 18 between the shoulders. The teeth of the jaw 11 are so arranged as to be disposed over the inclined walls between the shoulders 6 of the teeth of the jaw 5, and the jaw 11 is held in contacting relation with the jaw 5 through the medium of spring means 14 connecting both of the aws. It is to be noted that a considerable space is left between the arms 4 and the jaws 5 and 11 and also that the handle 10, at its connection with the lower face of the jaw 11 is rounded tothe said jaw, as indicated by the numeral 15. This provides a widened mouth or entrance between the arms 4 so that a halter strap 17 may be readily passed between the jaws and be engaged by the shoulders provided by the teeth of either of the jaws. When the animal is to be released a downward pressure is exerted upon the handle 10 which brings the jaw 11 away from the jaw 5, which permits the strap 17 being readily withdrawn from between the jaws.
It is believed, tion, when taken drawings, the simplicity of the construction and the advantages thereof will be readily apparent without further detailed description. Y
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
In a device for the purpose set forth, a block or casting having its lower portion provided with spaced arms and its upper portion arranged at an angle with respect to the arms and bifurcated, the. upper wall at the Said bifureated end of the block being rounded in one direction and being provided with transverse teeth, a jaw extending angu` larly from the said wall, of a less widththan the wall and provided with transverse teeth defining straight shoulders and angle surshoulders of the rst mentioned jaw, spring means for holding the jaws in contacting engagement, a handle formed outward of the pivot of the last mentioned jaw arranged angularly with respect to the said'jaw and having a rounded portion between the lower edge of the said handle and the said jaw, all as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GEORGE CHROMY.
