Be it known that I, JULIUS ROSENZW'EIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at 863 Home street, Bronx, New York city, New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Combined Hats and Bags, of which the following is a specifica ticn, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined hats and bags and it has for its objects among others to provide a simplified and cheap combination article embodying a hat and a bag for ladies use, the two being combined when used as a bag and separable so that the two members may be used each independently of the other and for its own individual purpose. The two members are so constructed that when the two are united and used as a bag, there is nothing to show but what it is simply a bag, the hat member serving as the outer receptacle and the bag proper being suspended from the upper edge thereof and within the hat.

The article may be made up in different kinds of goods and all kinds of fancy leather, the top portions of the bag being made of tortoise-shell, metal or any other desired material.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in its entirety, showing the two menr bers united and designed for use as a bag.

Fig. 2 is an elevation looking at the opposite side of that seen in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the two members separated and the bag partially removed from the hat.

Fig. 4c is a substantially central vertical ing at the upper edge the band 2 which constitutes the top front portion when used as a hat, as seen in F 5, the same being secured at its top edge to the top edge of the main portion of the hat, as seen at 3 in 1. This band or top portion has its ends free forming the flaps at, as seen in Figs. 1. and '8.

Upon the inner face of the hat portion at the rear of the band 2 are the female members 5 of snap fasteners while upon the inner face of the front top band portion (3, which is of elastic material within a shirred casing 7, as seen best in Fig. 4-, are the female members 8 of snap fasteners.

, The bag near its upper end at the front at the center is provided with a tab or the like 9 which is provided with, a female portion 10 of a snap fastener, the snap fasteners being of any well-known or approved form of construction. This constitutes the hat portion and when separated from the other member is designed for use upon the head as a hat, as seen in Fig. 5. r

The inner member of bag comprises the body portion 11 of any suitable material, preferably of the same nature as the hat portion, of smaller dimensions than the latter and designed to be loosely received within the same, as will be best understood upon reference to F ig. 4. At the upper front edge of the mouth there is a shirred casing 12 in which is an elastic similar to that at the upper edge of the hat member and at the center of this front portion is a tab 13 provided with a female member 14: of a snap fastener, as seen best in Fig. 3.

The outer end of the bag is provided with an extension or flap member 15 upon the under side of which at the widest point is a male member 16 adapted to cooperate with the female member 14 when used as a bag alone, and with the female member 10 of the snap fastener on the tab 9 when the two members are used together.

The flap member 15 is passed through a slot 17 in the tortoise-shell or metal member 18, as seen best in Fig. 3, the portion of this member below the slot being covered by the material of the bag, as at 19, as seen clearly in Fig. 3, this portion 19 being secured in position and provided with the male members 20 adapted to cooperate with the female members 8 on the inner face of the upper edge of the shirred portion 6 of the cap member.

The ends of the member 18 are provided with male portions 21 of snap fasteners which are designed to cooperate with the female portions5 on the band 2 of the hat when the two members are used together.

The member 18 is shown as provided with slots 22 at its ends for the reception and attachment of a handle portion 23 by which the bag may be carried 1n the hand.

In practice, when it is desired to use the outer member as a hat, the snap fasteners are disengaged and the bag portion is re moved from the hat portion when the latter may be applied to the head, as seen in Fig. 5. The bag portion can then be used solely as a bag, the mouth thereof being closed by engagement of the male member 16 with the female member 14 of the cooperating snap fastener members.

When it is not desired to use the outer member as a hat, the bag member proper is placed within the hat member 1 and the snap fastener members 21 and 5 are engaged with each other and the snap fastener members 20 and 8 are engaged with each other, when the male member 16 of the bag is engaged in the female member lO of the tab 9 of the hat member and the two parts are united and the mouth of the bag closed. When the male member 16 is disengaged from the female member 10, the mouth of the bag is open and both the bag and the hat member serve as receptacles for handkerchiefs or other articles.

The members, as a whole or separately, may be made as ornamental in appearance as desired and the device in its entirety is simple in the extreme, yet most serviceable for the purpose for which it is designed.

Modifications in details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

' What is claimed as new is 1. A combined hat and bag wherein the closure to the bag serves both with the bag proper and with the hat member the hat and bag being distinct members, and means for detachably uniting the two members, one member being receivable within the other.

- 2. A device of the class described, embodying a hat member with portions of separable fasteners, a bag member receivable within the hat member and having cooperating members of separable fasteners, and a flap to the bag adapted to serve as a closure for the bag both when used separately or with the hat member.

3. A device of the class described, embodying a hat member, and a bag member receivable within the latter, and means for detachably uniting the two whereby the hat member serves as a receptacle when the members are united.
