Be it known that ll, MARCUS B. BEHRMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of vNew York city, in the county of New York and State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'or Relating to Pile Wires for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to the class of looms adapt-ed for weaving pile fabrics, and consists in a novel construction of the wires employed in such looms for cutting the pile, it being commonly known that the wires are made use 'of ina group and are successively inserted into and withdrawn from the shed of the fabric. Each wire carries at one of its ends a blade or cutter, which when drawn through the pile loops or floats formed from the warp thread sever or cut.

` lln accordance with my invention the pile wire is provided at its forward end with a specially constructed holder to detachably receive and securely hold a small flat steel blade or cutter and said blade or cutter is of special construction adapting it to said holder and to cooperate with the bladesecuring features thereof.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide eiiicient blade-holding means which will permit `the convenient insertion of the blade into the holder therefor and the convenient removal of the blade therefrom, the blade while in operation being efectually and firmly held.
The invention will be fully understood from ,the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

1n the drawings 10 designates a loom pile wire and pile cutter which except for the presence of my invention applied thereto, is of usual form and construction. The pile `wire'is a reasonably thin strip or bar of steel and somewhat longer than the width of the fabric to be woven, and the method of employing the wires in a loom weaving pile fabrics is too well known to require description herein. 1 have only shown one wire 10 in the drawings but it is well known that the Vwires are used in groups and that all the wires of a group are alike.
Un the forward end of the pile wire 10 is a holder 11 for the blade or cutter 12, said holder being of sheet steel and the blank therefor being bent or folded into approximately U-shape in cross-section and receiving at one end and being brazed to the adjacent end of the rod 13 of the pile wire.
rllhe holder 11 is of special construction and between its side members 14, 15 is formed a long narrow recess or socket 16 to receive the back portion of the blade or cutter 12, the edge of the back of the blade being straight and seated against the upper surface of the dat bottom 17 of the recess or socket 16. The side member 14 of the holder 11 extends forwardly beyond the side member 15 and has vits outer end portion curved inwardly tol form the usual guard 18. 'llheside member 15 is, at its outer end, vertical and bent laterally toward the side member 14 to form a vertical ange 19 which normally closes the outer end of the recess 16 and serves as a shoulder or abutment for the outer vertical edge of the blade or cutter 12, as will be understood on reference to Figs. 1 and 2. Theouter end of the side member 15 extends vertically beyond the general upper horizontal plane of said member, as indicated at 20, and this allows the formation of a shoulder or flange 19 of considerable height for engagement with the outer edge of the blade 12 and results in the blade being eliciently held in opposition to the force exerted against its cutting edge by the pile loops when the pile wire is in action. The side member 15 is formed on its upper edge and in suitable relation to its outer end, with a finger 2l which is bent transversely across the recess 16 and engages the upper edge of the side member 14, said finger constituting a cross-bar which is engaged by the blade or cutter 12 and aids in securing the blade in the recess of the holder 1l.
The outer end of the bottom of the holder 11 is cut away or slotted,as at 22, as shown in Fig. 6, and this is for the purpose of permitting the outer end portion of the side member 14 of the holder to be conveniently flexed outwardly in a lateral direction, as shown in Fig. 3, on the occasions when it may be desired to apply the blade 12 to or remove the same from the recess 16 of the holder.
The blade or cutter 12 has an outer ver- I tical edge of comparatively considerable height to engage the flange or shoulder 19 on the holder 11, and said blade or cutter is formed with a bayonet slot composed of a. comparatively wide vertical member 23 and a narrow horizontal member 24, said member 23' bein slightly wider than the tongue or crossar 21 so as to be freely passed downwardly over the same, and said member 24 being slightly wider than the thickness of said tongue or cross bar 21 so as to be slid upon and along the same to the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5, wh1le at the same time the straight bottom edge 25 of the blade or cutter is slid along upon the` flat upper surface of the bottom 17 of the holder. The horizontal member 24 of the bayonet slot in the blade and the crossbar 21 on the holder are` relatively ositioned so that with the back edge 25 o the blade resting squarely on the bottom of the recess 16 in the holder, said member 24 of the bayonet slot may move upon and vertically embrace said cross-bar 21 and thereby keep said edge of the blade against the bottom of said recess and prevent tilting or rockin movement of the blade during the operation of the needle.
In appy ying the blade 12 to the holder 11, I first insert the ointed end of the blade with the blade inclined downwardly toward said end, into the recess 16 between the side members 14, 15 of the holder and position the vertical member 23 of the bayonet slot above the cross-bar 21, and I then flex the blade and outer end portion of the side member 14 outwardly, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the blade may clear the shoulder 19, and thereupon I press the blade downwardly to carry the slot-member 23 downwardly over the cross-bar 21 and move the edge 25 of the blade against the bottom of the recess 16, whereupon the blade is slid inwardly along said 'recess until the outer end edge 26 of the blade snaps behind the shoulder 19, the horizontal slot-member 24 in the'meantime sliding along the cross-bar 21, The blade 12 is securely held in operative position between the side members 14, 15 and against the bottom of the recess 16, by said members, the cross-bar 21 in cooperation with the slot-member 24 and the vertical shoulder 19 in cooperation with the vertical outer edge 26 of the blade.
0n removing the blade 12 from the holder, the outer end portions of the blade and side member 14 are flexed outwardly to clear the edge 26 of the blade from the shoulder 19 of the holder, and thereupon the blade is slid outwardly along the recess and said member 14 until the slot-member 24 leaves the crossbar 21, whereupon the blade may be lifted vertically from the recess 16, the slot-member 23 then sliding upwardly from the cross-bar 21.
In practice the blade 12 may be very convenient-ly and quickly applied to and removed from the holder 11 with the use of the thumb and fore-finger applied to the blade and without the employment of special The blade-holders vary in size but I aim to employ a standard blade 12'having the slot- members 23, 24, for all sizes of holders by so positioning the cross-bar (21) of the holders that the same may cooperate with said slot-members of the blade, as I illustrate in Fig. 8. in which, being a modification, I number the holder 27. The holder 27 differs from the holder 11 of Fig. 1 in being deeper and in having its side members recessed, as at 28, to lower the cross-bar 29 (corresponding with the aforesaid cross-bar 21) to a position in which it may cooperate with the bayonet slot members 28, 24 of the standard blade 12. The modification shown in Fig. 8, being so nearly the same as the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive, will be understood without further description.
In bothforms of the invention shown, the back or lower portion of the blade is wholly within the holder, and the blade is engaged at its outer end edge by a flange or shoulder crossing the outer end of the recess in the holder and which prevents the blade from sliding outwardly, when in use, from said recess, while at the same time the horizontal member 24 of the slot in the blade cooperates Leemans with the cross-bar 21 of the holder to prevent rocking or tilting of the blade and also to avoid undue inward movement of the blade along said recess, the closed end of the slot-member 24 and adjacent edge of the cross-bar acting as a. stop to arrest undue inward movement of the blade.
I have presented herein the preferred embodiment of my invention but I am aware that the details specifically described as to form and location are capable of modification within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims. Y
`What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. For use in looms for weaving pile-fabrics, a pile wire having on one end a bladeholder and a blade positioned in said holder, said blade having a bayonet. slot composed of a vertical member anda horizontal member, and said holder having a bottom and side members and forming a recess for the blade, said holder also having a crossbar crossing said recess, one of said side members having a flange crossing the end of said recess and forming ashoulder. to receive the outer end edge of the blade, and the other side-member beingl capable of being flexed outwardly from said shoulder to permit the insertion and removal of the blade, the vertical member of said slot having a width enabling it to straddle and move downwardly over said cross-bar and the horizontal member of said slot being of 'a width permitting it to straddle and slide longitudinally along said cross-bar.
2. For use in looms for weaving pile-fabrics, a pile wire having on one end a bladeholder and a blade positioned in said holder, said blade having a bayonet slot composed of a vertical member and a horizontal member, and said holder having a .bottom and side members and forming a recess for the blade, said holder' also having a cross-bar crossing said recess, one of said side members having a flange crossing the end of said recess and forming a shoulder to receive the outer end edge of the blade, and the other side-member being capable of being flexed outwardly from said shoulder to permit the insertion and removal of the blade, the `vertical member of said slot having a width enabling it to straddle and move downwardly over said cross-bar and the horizontal member of said slot being of a width permittingit to straddle and 'slide longitudinally along said cross-bar, said shoulder being extended upwardly beyond the general upper edge of the holder, and the blade having an outer end edge conforming to and enga ing said shoulder.
